MAYOR YAWO WINNY DOGBATSE OF KLOTO I, TOGO JOINS THE BOARD OF THE GLOBAL COVENANT OF MAYORS

Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt (14 November, 2022) – Today at COP27, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) announced the appointment of Mayor Yawo Winny Dogbatse of Kloto I, Togo to its Board of mayors and leaders. Mayor Dogbatse will replace outgoing Board Member and former mayor of Accra, Ghana, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, as the representative for Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Global Covenant Board represents the largest global alliance for city climate leadership, representing more than 12,500 cities and local governments around the world committed to addressing the climate crisis. The GCoM alliance is co-chaired by Michael R. Bloomberg, UN Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies and Bloomberg LP, and 108th Mayor of New York City, and Frans Timmermans, European Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal.

In his role as GCoM Board Member, Mayor Dogbatse will serve as an ambassador for urban climate action at the local, national, and global level and help encourage local leaders across Africa to adopt ambitious emissions reduction goals, helping national governments meet the highest ambitions of the Paris agreement. Mayor Dogbatse has been the mayor of Kloto I since 2019 and the city has become a Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) signatory in June 2018. He previously served as Chief of Cabinet for the Prime Minister and received the Order of Merit of Togo.

“It is a great honor to join the Board of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy,” said Mayor Dogbatse. “I look forward to working with so many remarkable leaders around the world to champion local climate action, advance sustainable development, and promote equitable climate adaption here in Kloto I and across the continent.”

“We’re glad to welcome Mayor Dogbatse to the Global Covenant of Mayors Board and looking forward to working together. Africa is home to some of the world’s fastest growing cities, whose residents face some of the biggest risks from climate change,” said Michael R. Bloomberg, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions, Global Covenant of Mayors Co-Chair, and founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies. “Mayor Dogbatse brings a wealth of knowledge and experience across different levels of government to help our coalition speed up progress throughout Africa and around the world. “

“Sub-Saharan Africa is a pivotal region for sustainable and fair climate development,” said Frans Timmermans, Co-Chair of the Global Covenant of Mayors and Executive Vice President for the European Green Deal. “Mayor Dogbatse will be an excellent voice to advance climate solutions across the continent and ensure local leaders are heard when shaping the climate policies around the world.”

Mayor Dogbatse’s term began in October 2022.
