How does the GCoM interact with the UNFCCC?
The GCoM supports local governments to commit, plan and implement climate and energy action that can contribute to meet the objectives of the Paris Agreement, adopted within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
To support and enable the ambitious local actions of its signatories, the GCoM works with Parties (National Governments), key stakeholders and partners active in the UNFCCC process, in particular connecting with the activities of the Local Government and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) constituency to the UNFCCC.
Local governments becoming part of GCoM pledge to set targets at least as ambitious as their country’s Nationally Determined Contributions, and to meet this target by implementing measurable climate and energy initiatives that lead to a low-emission and climate-resilient future, including universal access to clean and affordable energy for all.
